Cirrhosis

How can I avoid getting cirrhosis with hepatitis B?

Your liver is good at repairing itself, but if it gets too damaged it can develop cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver tissue. With hepatitis B, this can happen because of the damage the virus is causing, and also because your immune system attacks the infected liver cells.

If you are living with chronic hepatitis B, taking steps to protect your liver is important to avoid complications like cirrhosis. Follow these guidelines to help protect your liver.

  1. Get regular check-ups with your GP every 6 months. Follow your GP’s advice, including taking prescribed antiviral medications if necessary. These medications can help reduce the virus's activity and lower the risk of liver damage.

  2. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol.

  3. Maintain a healthy diet.

  4. Stay active and manage your weight.

  5. Limit the use of medicines or substances that can stress your liver.
